Seedream is a family of image generation models developed by ByteDance's Seed research team. The models create and edit images from text prompts and reference images, and are distributed through ByteDance's consumer products — the Doubao assistant and the Dreamina (Jimeng) creation app — as well as through cloud APIs such as Volcano Engine.[1][2]

History

Seedream sits alongside ByteDance's Seedance family of video models as part of the company's generative media line-up. Its international breakthrough was Seedream 3.0, launched on 16 April 2025: a bilingual Chinese-English text-to-image model with native 2K-resolution output and improved prompt understanding, deployed to Doubao and Jimeng in the weeks after release, with a technical report published on arXiv.[3][4]

Seedream 4.0 followed in September 2025, integrating image generation and image editing into a single unified architecture — one model that can both create an image and modify it through instructed edits, at native resolutions up to 4096 pixels (about 16.8 megapixels). ByteDance promoted the release to developers through its cloud platforms and third-party model hubs including Replicate.[1][5][6]

Seedream 5.0, announced in February 2026, pushed the family into multimodal reasoning. The 5.0 models add deep-thinking and online search capabilities, letting the system research references and reason about design intent before generating, and the company markets the top-tier Seedream 5.0 Pro as a model that understands design rather than merely producing images.[7][8]

Technology

Seedream models are diffusion-based systems optimised for high-resolution output and fast inference, with strong bilingual prompt understanding and the ability to render legible text inside images — a property valued for posters, packaging mock-ups and marketing visuals. The 4.0 generation unified generation and editing, and the 5.0 generation added reasoning and search, positioning Seedream against Google's image models (marketed as Nano Banana) and specialist tools such as Midjourney in what commentators described as an image-model arms race during 2025 and 2026.[5][7][9]

Applications and impact

The models serve advertising and e-commerce imagery, graphic design, social content and rapid creative experimentation, both inside ByteDance's apps and through APIs used by external developers. Reviewers noted that Seedream 4.0's combination of high resolution, editing capability and low price made it a leading choice for production design work shortly after launch, intensifying competition among Chinese and American image model providers.[1][2][5]

Seedream reaches Malaysian users mainly through ByteDance's consumer ecosystem and third-party creative platforms. Malaysian e-commerce sellers on Shopee, Lazada and TikTok Shop routinely need product visuals, lifestyle imagery and promotional posters at low cost, and AI image models have become a common tool for those tasks; design freelancers and agencies use them for mock-ups and campaign drafts. TikTok's large Malaysian user and seller base keeps ByteDance's tools close to local content workflows, while awareness of risks — misinformation, intellectual property questions over generated images, and reliance on foreign platforms — is rising in tandem with adoption promoted through national AI and digital economy programmes such as those run by MDEC.[10]
