Seedance is a family of generative artificial intelligence video models developed by ByteDance, the Chinese technology company behind the TikTok and Douyin platforms, through its Seed research team. Seedance models create high-definition video clips from text prompts, still images and other reference inputs, and by 2026 the family ranked among the most widely benchmarked video-generation systems, competing with models such as OpenAI's Sora, Google's Veo and Kuaishou's Kling AI.[1]

History

ByteDance publicly presented Seedance 1.0, the foundation model of the family, in June 2025, and subsequently published a technical report describing its design. The model supported text-to-video (T2V) and image-to-video (I2V) generation at up to 1080p resolution, with native multi-shot storytelling that allowed a single ten-second clip to contain two or three seamless shot transitions between wide, medium and close-up angles.[2]

In December 2025 BytePlus, ByteDance's international enterprise division, launched Seedance 1.5 Pro, a joint audio-video model that generates synchronised speech, sound effects, music and visuals together, with support for multilingual dialogue — a design aimed at moving beyond silent video generation.[3] On 12 February 2026 ByteDance announced Seedance 2.0, built on a unified multimodal audio-video joint-generation architecture. The model accepts four input modalities — text, image, audio and video — and integrates multimodal content references and editing capabilities, with substantial improvements in physical accuracy, motion plausibility and controllability for complex scenes.[4]

Key Concepts and Technology

Seedance models are generative systems trained on large corpora of video and audio. Their defining capability is the production of coherent, high-resolution clips from natural-language prompts: ByteDance reported that Seedance 1.0 could generate a five-second 1080p clip in roughly 41.4 seconds on an NVIDIA L20 GPU, and the company introduced the SeedVideoBench evaluation suite to measure prompt adherence, motion quality and aesthetics against rival models.[2]

Later versions extended the input side of the pipeline. Seedance 1.5 Pro treats audio and video as a single generation target, keeping lip movement, speech timing and scene-level sound effects aligned.[3] Seedance 2.0 adds "all-round reference" generation, in which a creator can supply a written storyboard, a character image, a scene photograph and an audio clip, and the model composes a video following all of them simultaneously.[4] Commercially, Seedance is distributed through Volcano Engine, ByteDance's Chinese cloud platform, and BytePlus for international enterprises, and the models are also accessible through third-party creative platforms. Independent leaderboards such as the Artificial Analysis Video Arena have tracked Seedance among the leading video models since 2025.[1]

Applications and Impact

Seedance is used mainly for short-form content, advertising, e-commerce product video and creative prototyping, where automated generation replaces traditional studio shoots. The audio-synchronised capabilities of Seedance 1.5 Pro opened applications in automated dubbing, talking-head content and dialogue-driven storytelling, while Seedance 2.0's improved physical realism made it suitable for complex action and interaction scenes that earlier models rendered poorly.[3][4]

The model family sits at the centre of an intense 2025–2026 competition among Chinese video-generation systems — including Kling AI, Alibaba's Wan and Zhipu's video models — that rapidly compressed the quality gap with Western services and pushed down prices for API-based video generation. As with other generative video models, the technology also raises concerns about deepfakes, likeness rights and content provenance, and ByteDance's official documentation requires identity verification or prior legal authorisation before generating video of real people.[4]

Seedance has found a ready market in Malaysia's short-video and advertising economy, where agencies, e-commerce sellers and content creators produce large volumes of video for TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. Because TikTok and ByteDance's ecosystem are central to Malaysian social commerce, Malaysian creators frequently encounter Seedance-generated video through ByteDance's tools or third-party platforms, and Seedance 1.5 Pro's multilingual dialogue generation supports Bahasa Melayu voice content and English-Malay code-switched advertising material.[3]

For Malaysian businesses, the likeness-verification requirements attached to Seedance matter under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 when promotional video depicts real customers, employees or brand ambassadors. Malaysian regulators and broadcasters have also stressed provenance and labelling for AI-generated video in the context of deepfake and misinformation risks, and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) continues to support local digital content and creative-technology companies that build on generative video tools.[5]
