CapCut (known in China as JianYing and formerly as ViaMaker) is a video editing application developed by ByteDance for mobile, desktop and web platforms. First released in China in May 2019 and rolled out internationally in April 2020 as the overseas edition of JianYing, it became one of the world's most widely used video editors, tightly integrated with the TikTok ecosystem, and has progressively absorbed generative AI features from ByteDance's video models.[1][2]

History

JianYing launched in China in 2019 to serve Douyin creators; the international version, briefly called ViaMaker, was rebranded CapCut in 2020. Pro versions for Windows and Mac followed in 2021, and the app spread through template-driven, mobile-first editing, passing 200 million monthly active users by early 2023. That year it became the second most downloaded app in the United States behind Temu, and in 2024 it led global AI application downloads with 38.4 million downloads and 323 million monthly active users reported in July.[1][5] CapCut passed one billion Google Play downloads by January 2025, the same month a TikTok-related US law briefly removed it from US app stores; it returned there in February 2025.[1] In March 2026, ByteDance began rolling its Dreamina Seedance 2.0 audio and video generation model into CapCut in a first wave of markets that included Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Brazil and Mexico, adding safety restrictions such as blocking real faces and unauthorised intellectual property in generated video.[3][4]

Key Features and Technology

CapCut's editing stack covers multi-track timelines, keyframes, transitions, effects, text and audio tools, with a template library that popularised one-tap editing for short video. Its AI layer includes auto captions built on speech recognition (widely used for Malay and English subtitles), smart background removal and matting, text-to-speech voices, beauty filters and AI design templates. Since 2024 generative features have expanded toward text-to-video and conversational creation: the Video Studio agent drafts a video from a chat description, and the Seedance 2.0 integration generates or edits clips of up to fifteen seconds from prompts, images or reference videos. The product uses a freemium model, with CapCut Pro subscriptions unlocking advanced tools; AI features are subject to watermarking, export limits and content safeguards.[2][3]

Applications and Impact

CapCut has been central to the creator economy around short-form video: social media marketers, e-commerce sellers, students and professional editors all use it to produce content quickly and at low cost. Its rise illustrates how AI features move from novelty to default tooling — captions, matting and generated footage are now standard parts of consumer editing. It also illustrates the associated tensions: copyright and likeness questions around generative video, platform policies on synthetic media labelling, and the geopolitics of ByteDance's ownership, which led to the brief 2025 US removal.[1][3]

🇲🇾Malaysian Context

CapCut is one of the most popular creative apps among Malaysian users, particularly TikTok creators, TikTok Shop sellers and small businesses that produce product videos and live-selling content without dedicated editing software. Free AI features such as auto captions lower costs for micro-entrepreneurs, and Malay-language subtitle generation makes content more accessible. Malaysia's inclusion in the first wave of CapCut's Seedance 2.0 rollout in March 2026 reflects the importance of Southeast Asian creator markets to ByteDance. Malaysian users should still observe platform rules and copyright law when generating commercial videos, and businesses handling customer footage should consider obligations under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.[3][4]
