xAI is an American artificial intelligence company founded by entrepreneur Elon Musk in July 2023 with the stated mission of understanding the true nature of the universe through artificial intelligence. The company develops the Grok family of large language models, operates one of the world's largest AI training supercomputers, and competes directly with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind in the frontier model landscape. xAI distinguishes itself through real-time integration with the X (formerly Twitter) social platform, a comparatively open approach to model releases, and an exceptionally rapid scale-up of compute infrastructure.^[1]

Founding and Motivation

Elon Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but departed its board in 2018 amid disagreements over the organisation's direction and safety philosophy. In the years following, Musk publicly criticised OpenAI's transition from a non-profit to a capped-profit entity and expressed concern that the company had become closed and overly cautious. In July 2023, Musk announced the formation of xAI, framing the venture as a maximalist-truth-seeking alternative to AI systems he characterised as politically biased or excessively filtered.^[2]

The company's founding team included researchers with prior experience at DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, and Tesla, with specialisations spanning large language model training, reinforcement learning, and AI safety. xAI was incorporated in Nevada and established operations in the San Francisco Bay Area, with its principal data centre buildout located in Memphis, Tennessee.

Grok Model Family

xAI's flagship product is Grok, a series of large language models designed for conversational AI, reasoning, and real-time information retrieval. The name derives from Robert Heinlein's novel Stranger in a Strange Land, in which "grok" means to understand something so thoroughly that the observer becomes part of the observed.

Grok-1 was released in November 2023 as a beta product available to X Premium+ subscribers. In March 2024, xAI released Grok-1's model weights under the Apache 2.0 licence — a 314-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model — making it one of the largest openly available models at the time. Subsequent versions (Grok-2 in August 2024, Grok 3 in February 2025, and Grok 4 in July 2025) introduced multimodal capabilities, dedicated reasoning modes, extended context windows of up to 2 million tokens, and deep tool-use integration during inference.^[3]

Colossus Supercomputer

In 2024, xAI constructed Colossus, an AI training cluster in Memphis, Tennessee, initially comprising 100,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs — built and brought online in approximately 122 days. The facility was expanded in 2025 with plans to scale to over 200,000 GPUs, placing it among the most powerful privately operated AI compute clusters in the world. This infrastructure underpins the training of Grok 3, Grok 4, and subsequent frontier models.^[4]

The Memphis buildout drew attention for its speed and scale, as well as local concerns around electricity consumption and water usage for cooling, prompting engagement with the Tennessee Valley Authority and local utility providers.

Business Model and Distribution

xAI distributes Grok through three primary channels: (1) the X social platform, where Grok serves as the integrated AI assistant; (2) the xAI API, which provides developer and enterprise access to Grok models with competitive pricing; and (3) Grok.com, a standalone consumer web and mobile application. In 2025, xAI launched a consumer SuperGrok subscription tier and introduced Aurora, a text-to-image generation model integrated into the Grok experience.

The company has raised substantial capital, including a USD 6 billion Series B round in 2024 and subsequent funding pushes valuing the company at approximately USD 80 billion by late 2025, backed by investors including Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, and funds associated with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Competitive Position

xAI occupies a distinctive position in the frontier AI landscape. Unlike OpenAI and Anthropic, which maintain closed-weight models, xAI has released select model weights openly. Unlike Google and Meta, which operate broad AI research divisions alongside other businesses, xAI is a pure-play AI company solely focused on model development and deployment. Its integration with X provides a built-in distribution channel and real-time data stream that competitors must replicate through partnerships or licensing.^[5]

Critics have raised concerns about Grok's comparatively permissive content policies, the potential for misinformation amplified through X integration, and the environmental impact of the Colossus facility. xAI has responded by noting that its models include safety training and that its design philosophy prioritises giving users tools to evaluate information rather than pre-filtering it.
