Trae is an AI-native integrated development environment (IDE) developed by ByteDance, the Chinese technology company behind TikTok and the Doubao model family. First released in January 2025, it pairs a VS Code-derived editor with an agentic Builder mode that reads a project, plans tasks, writes files and runs terminal commands from a natural-language brief — positioning it as a free, model-agnostic alternative in the AI coding tool market.^[1][2]
