n8n is a source-available workflow automation platform developed by the Berlin-based company n8n GmbH. It combines a visual, node-based editor with the option to write custom code, allowing users to connect hundreds of applications and services into automated workflows that can be self-hosted or run in the vendor's cloud. Since 2023 it has expanded aggressively into AI, adding native tooling for building and orchestrating AI agents.[1][5]

n8n was founded in 2019 by Jan Oberhauser as a side project and distributes its software under a "fair-code" licence that keeps the source code visible and permits self-hosting and modification while restricting commercial redistribution. Following a US$180 million Series C round in 2025 and a strategic investment by SAP in May 2026 at a US$5.2 billion valuation, it has become one of Germany's most valuable artificial intelligence companies.[2][4][6]

History

Oberhauser started n8n in Berlin in 2019 after finding the workflow automation tools available to him at work too expensive and too closed, and the platform grew through a community of self-hosting users and contributors. Its name is a contraction of "nodemation", reflecting its node-based design. The company later added a managed cloud offering and enterprise licensing while keeping the core product source-available.[4][5]

The project's commercial momentum accelerated in 2025. Highland Europe led a EUR 55 million Series B round announced in March 2025, and in October 2025 n8n announced a US$180 million Series C round led by Accel with participation from investors including Nvidia's venture arm, bringing total funding to US$240 million at a US$2.5 billion valuation.[1][3]

In May 2026 SAP announced a strategic investment in n8n, valuing the company at US$5.2 billion, and disclosed that n8n would be embedded natively inside SAP's Joule Studio, the agent-building environment within its enterprise platform, with general availability planned for the third quarter of 2026. SAP's investment roughly doubled n8n's valuation within a year and gave the platform a route into the workflows of large enterprises that run SAP software.[2][4][7]

Key Concepts and Technology

n8n's core is a visual canvas on which users drag and connect nodes representing applications, data transformations and logic. Workflows begin with a trigger — a schedule, a webhook or an event — and proceed through actions and branches; anything the built-in nodes do not cover can be handled with JavaScript or Python code nodes or a generic HTTP request. The platform ships with integrations for more than 400 services, from email and spreadsheets to databases and messaging platforms, and supports self-hosting through Docker for organisations that need to keep data inside their own infrastructure.[5][6]

The modern n8n positions itself deliberately between no-code tools and bespoke engineering. Its AI agent nodes let users attach language models, memory, tools and retrieval steps to a workflow, so that an agent can decide when to call an external system while the surrounding pipeline keeps deterministic guarantees where required. The company argues that enterprises need both kinds of automation — deterministic steps for compliance checks and billing, and probabilistic agentic steps for tasks such as triaging tickets or drafting messages — in the same environment.[2][5]

The fair-code licence is central to n8n's strategy: users can inspect, modify and self-host the product, while the company earns revenue from cloud hosting, enterprise features and support. Data sovereignty, audit trails and sector compliance are recurring selling points for regulated customers, and the platform is one of the most-starred JavaScript projects on GitHub, with more than 200,000 stars by late 2026.[4][6]

Applications and Impact

n8n is used both by individual developers and by large enterprises. By mid-2026 the company reported 1.7 million monthly active builders and more than 1,400 enterprise customers, including Fortune 500 teams running mission-critical processes, and annual recurring revenue reported at tens of millions of dollars with rapid growth. Typical use cases include internal approval flows, lead routing, data synchronisation between systems, chatbots and back-office processes that previously required custom integration code.[2][4]

The SAP partnership illustrated the gap n8n fills in enterprise AI stacks: large organisations run hundreds of applications alongside their core enterprise software, and n8n acts as the orchestration layer that lets AI agents take actions across them without bespoke integration projects. The arrangement keeps workflow data inside the customer's SAP environment when required, addressing data residency and governance concerns that have slowed agent adoption in regulated industries.[4][7]

n8n is relevant to Malaysian organisations because it lowers the cost of process automation for small and medium enterprises, which make up the large majority of businesses in the country. Instead of paying per-seat prices in foreign currency for proprietary automation suites, Malaysian teams can self-host n8n on local or regional cloud infrastructure — including the AWS Asia Pacific region in Kuala Lumpur and Microsoft's Malaysia West region — which also helps with data residency expectations under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.[9][11]

Skills in this area are supported by training programmes that companies can fund through HRD Corp levies, part of a broader push to raise AI literacy across the workforce.[8]
