MIMOS Berhad
MIMOS Berhad is Malaysia's national applied research and development centre under MOSTI, advancing technology platforms in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and quantum computing.
MIMOS Berhad is Malaysia's national applied research and development centre, operating under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI). Originally established in the 1980s and corporatised in the 1990s, MIMOS has evolved into a strategic agency that develops patentable technology platforms, products, and solutions intended to be commercialised by Malaysian industry. Its mandate spans several frontier areas, with artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and quantum technologies forming the core of its current strategy.
Role and mandate
As the national applied R&D centre, MIMOS sits between fundamental academic research and commercial product development. It works with government ministries, industry, and universities to translate research into deployable technology, and it holds an extensive portfolio of intellectual property that local companies can license. This positioning is intended to reduce Malaysia's dependence on imported technology and to build domestic capability in strategically important fields. MIMOS operates national-grade laboratory facilities, including a Semiconductor Technology Centre (STC) and dedicated facilities for 5G and artificial intelligence innovation.
Artificial intelligence work
MIMOS's AI activities cover both applied solutions and the supporting national infrastructure for AI adoption. Among its most visible contributions is the MY-AI Portal, described as Malaysia's first national online platform dedicated to AI resources, awareness, and policy issues, which MIMOS develops, hosts, and maintains on behalf of MOSTI. The agency has also pursued machine-vision and AI projects for industrial and security applications, and has partnered with global technology firms, including a collaboration with Microsoft on an artificial intelligence centre aimed at accelerating Malaysia's Industry 4.0 transition.
Beyond conventional deep learning, MIMOS conducts research in neuromorphic computing, which seeks more energy-efficient AI hardware modelled loosely on biological neural systems. The agency has also invested in quantum technology over more than a decade, culminating in the establishment of a MIMOS Quantum Intelligence Centre that explores the intersection of quantum computing and machine learning.
National science and literacy initiatives
MIMOS plays a public-facing role in advancing science and technology literacy. It has used national platforms such as Science Week to promote AI literacy across schools, industry, and the general public, supporting the broader policy goal of preparing Malaysia's workforce for an AI-driven economy. The agency has also engaged in international collaboration, including AI partnerships with countries such as Türkiye, to share expertise and expand Malaysia's deep-technology footprint.
Strategic significance
MIMOS is one of several institutions that together form Malaysia's national AI architecture. Where the National AI Office sets coordination and governance direction, and where MDEC drives digital-economy adoption, MIMOS provides the underlying applied research and technology platforms. This division of labour reflects a deliberate national strategy to combine policy, commercialisation, and research capacity rather than relying on any single body.
