Devin AI is an AI-assisted software development tool created by Cognition (also known as Cognition Labs) that is designed to autonomously complete software development tasks.[1] The company describes Devin as "the first autonomous software engineer," operating as an agent that plans, writes, tests, and ships production code.[3]
History
Cognition was founded in August 2023 by Scott Wu, Steven Hao, and Walden Yan, competitive programmers who had won gold medals at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI).[2] In March 2024, the company released a demo of Devin AI, which it said could perform the tasks of a software engineer.[2] The company was backed by Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, which provided US$21 million in early 2024 at a US$350 million valuation, followed by a US$175 million investment in April 2024 that valued the company at US$2 billion.[2] Cognition reached a US$4 billion valuation in March 2025 and, after acquiring the agentic IDE Windsurf in July 2025, was valued at US$10 billion in September 2025.[2] In June 2026, Cognition announced the rebranding of Windsurf to Devin Desktop, integrating the editor with Devin's autonomous engineering capabilities.[2]
Key Concepts
Devin AI works through natural-language prompting: a user describes a task, and the agent responds by generating a plan and the code, searching online resources during the process, and adjusting its approach when the user reports issues or bugs.[1] The system was built by training large language models with techniques drawn from reinforcement learning.[1] Cognition positions Devin as an "exponential collaborator" that helps engineers operate more like architects — strategising, designing systems, and focusing on problem solving — while the agent handles repetitive engineering work.[3]
Applications and Impact
In a test conducted by Bloomberg, Devin AI created a website within ten minutes and recreated a Pong website in a similar timeframe.[1] Cognition states that Devin is deployed at some of the largest and most complex institutions in the world.[3] The tool has received both praise and skepticism: Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas called it "the first demo of any agent, leave alone coding, that seems to cross the threshold" of human capability, while commentators have raised concerns about its implications for the software development industry, including the potential to change the role of human developers.[1]
