History
Cognition AI was founded in 2023 by Scott Wu, Steven Hao and Walden Yan, engineers previously known for competitive programming. Devin was announced on 12 March 2024 with a demonstration in which the agent planned and executed multi-step engineering tasks such as building and deploying a small application. On SWE-bench, a benchmark drawn from real GitHub issues in open-source repositories, Cognition reported that Devin resolved 13.86 per cent of problems unaided, against less than 2 per cent for the best previous unaided system — a result that drew broad attention to autonomous coding agents. The launch also attracted scepticism, with reviewers cautioning that curated demonstrations overstated day-to-day reliability, and Cognition positioning Devin as a productivity multiplier for engineering teams rather than a replacement for engineers. In April 2024 the company raised US$175 million at a US$2 billion valuation.[1][3][4]
Through 2025 the product shifted toward enterprise use. Reported annualised revenue grew from about US$1 million in September 2024 to roughly US$73 million by June 2025, and in July 2025 Cognition acquired Windsurf, the AI code editor, shortly after Google licensed Windsurf's founding team. The deal helped lift Cognition's valuation to US$10.2 billion in September 2025. In May 2026 the company announced a Series D round of more than US$1 billion at a US$26 billion post-money valuation, led by Lux Capital, General Catalyst and 8VC, disclosing US$492 million in annualised run-rate revenue and six consecutive months of roughly 50 per cent month-on-month growth in enterprise usage.[2][4][5]
Key Concepts and Technology
Devin belongs to the class of coding agents — AI systems that execute software tasks rather than merely suggesting code completions. Each Devin session runs in an isolated cloud workspace equipped with a code editor, terminal and browser; the agent reads the repository, formulates a plan, edits files, runs tests and iterates until the task is complete, producing a transparent history of actions and commits for human review. Tasks can be assigned through a chat interface, through Slack, or programmatically through an API, and teams can run multiple Devin sessions in parallel so several workstreams proceed at once. The approach contrasts with autocomplete tools such as GitHub Copilot and with interactive assistants such as Cursor and Claude Code: Devin emphasises asynchronous execution, where the agent works while engineers attend to other tasks. The trade-offs are supervision, token cost and the gap between benchmark performance and messy production codebases, which is why vendors of all coding agents recommend review before merger. Cognition has also trained its own SWE-series models to power Devin and Windsurf.[1][2][6]
Adoption and Impact
Devin helped establish autonomous software engineering as a commercial category, and by 2026 it competed with OpenAI's Codex, Anthropic's Claude Code, Cursor and GitHub Copilot in a rapidly growing enterprise market. Its spread has fuelled debate about how engineering teams are structured: vendors argue agents absorb routine work — migrations, test generation, dependency upgrades — while critics note risks to entry-level roles and the difficulty of verifying large volumes of machine-written code. Cognition says its enterprise customers range from software companies to large non-technology firms that maintain substantial in-house engineering organisations.[2][5][6]
