Cyberjaya is a planned technology city in the Sepang District of Selangor, Malaysia, located roughly 25 kilometres south of Kuala Lumpur within the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC). Inaugurated on 17 May 1997 and developed by Cyberview Sdn Bhd, Cyberjaya was conceived as the operational nucleus of Malaysia's effort to leapfrog into the global information and communication technology economy. Today it covers about 28.94 square kilometres and hosts more than nine hundred companies spanning multinationals, established firms, and startups, with a strong concentration in cloud, cybersecurity, fintech, and artificial intelligence.

History and governance

Cyberjaya was launched as part of the broader MSC Malaysia initiative championed by the fourth Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who modelled the corridor on global innovation hubs such as Silicon Valley and Hsinchu. The city is master-planned by Cyberview Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Minister of Finance Incorporated, while the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) — established in 1996 under the Ministry of Communications and Digital — is headquartered in Cyberjaya and administers the Malaysia Digital national initiative that succeeded the original MSC status programme in 2022.

Role in Malaysia's AI ecosystem

Cyberjaya has become the centre of gravity for AI policy and capacity building in Malaysia. MDEC coordinates the National AI Roadmap, manages the Malaysia AI Sandbox in partnership with the Ministry of Digital, and operates programmes such as #mydigitalmaker and AI Untuk Rakyat that have introduced foundational AI literacy to millions of Malaysians. The National AI Office (NAIO), formally launched in December 2024 under the Ministry of Digital, has anchored several of its early activities in Cyberjaya alongside MDEC.

Multimedia University (MMU), founded in 1996 and based in Cyberjaya, was Malaysia's first private university and remains a primary feeder of engineering and computer science talent into local AI firms. Research centres including MIMOS Berhad and Cyberview's own Living Lab pilot smart-city, autonomous-mobility, and AI applications across the city itself.

Data centre cluster

Cyberjaya is one of the densest data centre corridors in Southeast Asia. Operators with facilities in or adjacent to Cyberjaya include AIMS, Bridge Data Centres, NTT GDC, Open DC, Vantage Data Centers, and YTL Data Center Holdings. In February 2026 AIMS announced a new 200 MW AI-ready data centre on a 10-acre Cyberjaya site, with an estimated RM4 billion investment and target completion in 2027. The build forms part of a broader wave of AI infrastructure investment that has also expanded into Johor (Sedenak and Kulai) and Iskandar Puteri.

Industry and tenants

Multinationals operating engineering or shared-services centres in Cyberjaya include HSBC, Shell, DHL, Ericsson, IBM, Dell, HP, BMW, and AIA. Local AI and fintech firms — including those developing agentic AI platforms, payments infrastructure, and Bahasa Malaysia language models — frequently base their headquarters in Cyberjaya to take advantage of Malaysia Digital incentives, proximity to MDEC, and ready access to KLIA airport.

Living lab and smart city programmes

Cyberview has positioned Cyberjaya as a national living lab for drones, autonomous vehicles, robotics, and digital twins. Memoranda of understanding signed between Cyberview, technology partners, and government agencies aim to expand Cyberjaya's role as a global tech hub through smart-city deployments, talent programmes, and joint research with industry.
