ComfyUI is an open-source, node-based interface for generating images and video with artificial intelligence models. Instead of a simple text box, ComfyUI represents every step of the generation pipeline — model loading, prompting, sampling, upscaling and post-processing — as nodes connected in a visual graph, giving users precise control and allowing workflows to be saved, shared and reproduced.[1][2]
History and Background
ComfyUI was created by the developer known as comfyanonymous (Yannik Marek), who encountered Stable Diffusion in October 2022 and built the tool as a testing ground for diffusion model research. The project was released as open source in early 2023 and grew rapidly within the AI art community as a more powerful alternative to web-based interfaces.[1][3]
In 2024 the project's maintainers formed Comfy Org to support the ecosystem, and ComfyUI became one of the most popular interfaces for Stable Diffusion alongside AUTOMATIC1111's webui. Comfy Org joined the Linux Foundation's Open Model Initiative, and in 2025 announced US$30 million in funding to scale open-source AI for creative production. As of July 2026 the project had more than 122,000 stars on GitHub, and third-party estimates reported over four million users and more than 150,000 daily downloads.[1][3][4]
Technology
ComfyUI works by arranging nodes into a graph: each node performs one operation, such as loading a checkpoint, encoding a text prompt, sampling the diffusion model, or applying an upscaler, and edges carry data between nodes. This design offers several advantages:
- Reproducibility — a complete workflow, including all parameters and model versions, can be saved as a single JSON file and shared with others.[2]
- Model support — native support for Stable Diffusion 1.5, SDXL, SD3.5, Flux 1 and 2, Qwen Image, Hunyuan Image and many other image, video and audio models, plus ControlNet, LoRA and LCM components.[2]
- Efficiency — asynchronous queueing, partial graph re-execution, smart VRAM management, model offloading and support for quantized models allow large models to run on consumer hardware.[2]
- Extensibility — a community ecosystem of more than 60,000 custom nodes extends the interface for specialised tasks.[3]
Applications and Impact
ComfyUI is used by digital artists, VFX studios, game developers, e-commerce teams and researchers to produce images, motion content, 3D models and soundscapes. Professional creators use it to build reproducible pipelines for consistent character design, automate asset generation and experiment with new models by plugging them into existing node graphs. The platform offers Comfy Desktop for local use, Comfy Cloud for hosted generation, and APIs for integrating workflows into applications, while the core software remains free and open source under the GPL-3.0 licence.[3][4]
