Baidu AI is the artificial intelligence division of Baidu, the Chinese technology company that operates China's largest search engine. Its work spans foundation models — chiefly the ERNIE family — cloud computing infrastructure, generative-AI applications, and autonomous driving through its Apollo programme.[1]

History

Baidu began serious AI research in 2013 with the establishment of its Institute of Deep Learning, and released PaddlePaddle, an open deep-learning framework, in 2016. Its ERNIE (Enhanced Representation through Knowledge Integration) line of language models debuted in 2019 as a pre-training approach that injects structural knowledge — entities, relations and phrases — into the standard transformer objective.[2]

The launch of ChatGPT triggered an industry race in China, and Baidu announced ERNIE Bot (Wenxin Yiyan) in March 2023, one of the first Chinese chatbots to reach the public. Baidu subsequently open-sourced parts of its model stack and, in mid-2025, released the ERNIE 4.5 family — including a mixture-of-experts model — under the Apache 2.0 licence, a notable shift for a company whose commercial advantage had rested on closed access.[3]

Models and Platforms

ERNIE 5.0, formally released in January 2026, is described by Baidu as a unified multimodal model trained from scratch on native full-modality data rather than assembled from separate text, image and audio components, and is reported at roughly 2.4 trillion parameters. Its successor line, ERNIE 5.1, extends the pre-training corpus and long-context handling.[4]

Alongside the flagship models sits ERNIE X1, a reasoning-focused model positioned against Western reasoning systems such as GPT-5 and Gemini, and ERNIE 4.5 Turbo / 5.0 Turbo variants tuned for low-latency, low-cost API serving — pricing competition that has driven down inference costs across the Chinese market.[5]

The consumer surface is ERNIE Bot, available through web and mobile apps with search integration. The enterprise surface is Baidu AI Cloud (Qianfan), which offers model-as-a-service, fine-tuning and deployment tooling to Chinese businesses and government agencies. Baidu's third pillar is Apollo Go, its robotaxi service, which has operated commercial driverless fares across multiple Chinese cities and makes Baidu one of the world's largest robotaxi operators by ride volume.[1]

Strategic Position

Baidu competes at once with China's other platform giants — Alibaba (Qwen), Tencent, ByteDance and Huawei — and with specialised model developers such as DeepSeek and Zhipu. Its differentiators are the integration of AI into search and maps, a large cloud customer base, and a real-world autonomy business that few model labs possess. It has also been a vocal advocate for open model releases, arguing that open ecosystems accelerate adoption in the Chinese market.[3]

>Key Takeaways

  • Baidu AI is built on the ERNIE model family, which has run since 2019 and now includes multimodal (5.0) and reasoning (X1) lines.
  • The company is unusual in combining foundation models, cloud services and a commercial robotaxi operation.
  • Open-sourcing ERNIE 4.5 under Apache 2.0 signalled a strategic turn toward ecosystem adoption.
  • Its main relevance to Malaysia is Chinese-language capability, advertising services and Chinese inference-price competition.

🇲🇾Malaysian Context

🇲🇾 Relevance to Malaysia: Baidu maintains a direct commercial relationship with Malaysian businesses through Baidu Global advertising and marketing services, which have long been used by local exporters and SMEs to reach the Chinese-language market — ERNIE-based copywriting and image generation tools are increasingly bundled into those offerings. ERNIE's strength in Chinese and multilingual processing also makes it relevant to Malaysia's Chinese-language business documentation, media and education sectors.

Malaysian AI adopters benefit from the price pressure Baidu and its Chinese rivals exert on inference: cheap, high-volume API tiers from Chinese providers have become a practical option for cost-sensitive local startups, subject to the data-governance review that any cross-border model endpoint requires under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010. Malaysia's engagement with China's AI ecosystem — through MDEC's digital-economy partnerships and the wider China–Malaysia technology cooperation agenda — is the policy channel through which Baidu's cloud and autonomous-driving technologies are most likely to enter the local market.
