AI search engines, also called answer engines, are web search systems that use large language models (LLMs) to retrieve current web information and generate direct, cited answers to user queries, rather than returning ranked lists of links for the user to click through.[1]
History
Perplexity AI launched in December 2022 as an "AI-powered answer engine", offering a web search engine that synthesizes responses with large language models and real-time web search capabilities, citing the sources used.[1] OpenAI subsequently added search capabilities to ChatGPT, while Google introduced AI Overviews — AI-generated summaries embedded in standard search results — and later AI Mode, a full-page conversational search experience powered by its Gemini models.[2][3] By October 2025, Google had expanded AI Mode to more than 200 countries and territories and over 35 new languages.[3] According to Similarweb data reported by TechCrunch in July 2026, Google's AI Overviews went from appearing in about 15% of searches to 43% within a year, while visits to AI Mode rose from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026.[2]
Key Concepts
AI search engines are built on retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), combining web retrieval with LLM generation so answers are grounded in current content. A defining feature is citation, with platforms attributing answers to sources — though citation patterns differ sharply: a study of 30 million citations across the platforms from August 2024 to June 2025 found that ChatGPT sourced roughly 48% of its answers from Wikipedia, while Google AI Overviews and Perplexity drew most heavily from Reddit (21% and 47% respectively).[4] The rise of AI-generated answers has produced zero-click behavior, in which users obtain information without visiting publisher websites, and has made content visibility within AI answers ("AI citations") a new focus of search optimization.[2][5]
Applications and Impact
AI search engines are used for research, coding help, shopping, and everyday fact-finding, and market analyses report that a substantial share of consumers now begin their searches with AI tools rather than traditional engines.[5] Their growth has disrupted publisher traffic, with industry estimates showing large declines in organic traffic to health, how-to, finance, and news content as AI-generated summaries capture user attention.[2] In response, some platforms have adjusted their designs — for example, a May 2026 update to ChatGPT more than doubled the share of its U.S. desktop referrals that land on publisher webpages.[2]

Google's AI Mode was rolled out in Malaysia as part of the global expansion to over 200 countries, with Malay among the newly supported languages, and Malaysian agencies report active local use of the feature.[3][6] Google's Gemini Report for Southeast Asia 2026 found strong Malaysian adoption of AI assistants, noting that the share of Malay-language requests to Gemini more than doubled in early 2026 compared with a year earlier.[7] For Malaysian publishers, e-commerce businesses, and government services, the shift toward AI-generated answers raises the same questions of referral traffic, misinformation, and discoverability seen globally, and the National AI Office (NAIO) and MDEC have encouraged responsible adoption of generative AI across the digital economy.[8]
