Malaysia's halal certification system has operated since the 1970s under the administration of JAKIM, which issues the Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM) recognised across many markets. In supply chain and logistics, AI-powered traceability platforms combine machine learning with blockchain ledgers to track products from farm to fork, detect anomalies, and prove to buyers that the halal chain was never broken. Malaysian logistics operators use platforms such as the HIAS system from DagangHalal, which provides AI-enabled tracking and real-time alerts for cold-chain integrity.[4][5] Academic literature highlights that AI can detect adulteration and mislabelling with high accuracy, reducing fraud and building consumer trust in halal claims.[2][9]
Economic and Policy Context
The halal economy is a strategic pillar of Malaysia's economic policy, with halal exports representing a multibillion-ringgit market and halal logistics alone estimated to carry tens of billions of ringgit in export potential.[5] The Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) is among the world's largest halal trade events, and at MIHAS 2025 the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) used its MADANI Digital Trade platform to connect 600 Malaysian halal exporters, including micro, small, and medium enterprises, with 300 international buyers through digital business matching.[1] Malaysia has also proposed the creation of an ASEAN Halal Council to harmonise certification standards across the region, which would increase the importance of interoperable digital verification systems.[1]
