Artificial intelligence in video games refers to the computational systems that control non-player characters (NPCs), generate dynamic game behavior, and simulate strategic decision-making within games.[1] In practice, game AI draws on techniques from computer science, control theory, and robotics rather than "true" artificial intelligence, and academic AI — aimed at autonomous reasoning — is distinct from game AI, whose goal is engaging gameplay.[1]
History
AI has been part of video games since the earliest arcade titles, with systems such as Pac-Man's ghost behavior and chess programs serving as early showcases. Classic game AI includes navigation and pathfinding for NPCs in dynamic environments, and procedural content generation (PCG) for creating levels and worlds algorithmically.[1] The deep-learning era introduced data-driven approaches: generative adversarial networks (GANs) and, later, diffusion models began generating in-game content at runtime — for example, the terrain generation system in PlayerUnknown Productions' Prologue: Go Wayback! generates a new game map every time the game is launched.[2] According to the Game Developers Conference's 2025 State of the Game Industry report, more than 50% of game development companies now use generative AI for content creation, testing, and design.[3] The technology has also generated controversy: Embark Studios' ARC Raiders (November 2025) was criticized by some outlets for using generative AI voices for NPCs.[1]

Modern game AI spans NPC behavior (navigation, decision-making, group coordination), procedural content generation, and machine learning techniques such as imitation learning and reinforcement learning for adaptive opponents.[1][2] Generative AI extends PCG by using deep learning to automate 2D/3D asset creation, scene assembly, and narrative scaffolding, and to power LLM-based NPCs with dynamic dialogue and adaptive difficulty.[4] The global AI-in-gaming market was projected to grow from about US$3.28 billion in 2024 to more than US$51 billion by 2033.[3]
Applications and Impact
Generative AI is used by studios to reduce production time and cost in art asset creation, level design, testing, and localization, and to create more responsive NPCs and personalized player experiences.[3][4] It is also used to simulate opponents, balance matches, and generate commentary, making esports more immersive.[3] At the same time, the industry debates the impact of generative AI on creative jobs, voice actors, and artistic direction, as illustrated by the ARC Raiders voice controversy.[1]
