AI avatars, also called digital humans, are computer-generated virtual presenters that use artificial intelligence to replicate a real person's appearance, facial expressions, voice, and mannerisms — or to simulate entirely fictional presenters — in order to deliver video content generated from text scripts.[3][4]

History

AI avatar platforms emerged from research into talking-head generation and face animation. D-ID, founded in 2017, commercialized deep-learning face animation that turns still photos into speaking videos.[4] Synthesia built a text-to-video platform with a library of over 200 AI avatars that adapt tone, body movement, and expressions to the script, and reports being trusted by over 60% of the Fortune 100.[3] HeyGen grew into a leading platform for marketing and personalized sales videos, while Colossyan and others focused on corporate learning and development.[5][6] In Malaysia, Astro AWANI introduced AI news avatars "Joon" and "Monica" in May 2023 to deliver segments of its news broadcasts, and Astro later launched "AI News Flash" on Astro AEC, which used AI cloning technology to replicate the appearances and voices of human anchors Angela Ang and Celes Loh alongside a new virtual anchor.[1][2]

Key Concepts

Avatar systems combine several AI components: text-to-video generation that turns scripts into footage, lip-sync so the avatar's mouth matches the audio, expressive avatars that modulate emotion and gestures, and integration with voice cloning and neural text-to-speech so each avatar has a consistent voice.[3][4] Modern platforms generate videos in many languages — Colossyan, for example, advertises automated translation into over 80 languages — which allows one script to be localized without reshooting.[6] Custom avatars are typically created by recording a short video of a person, which the system uses to build a "digital twin" presenter.

Applications and Impact

AI avatars are widely used for corporate training and onboarding, marketing, education, product demonstrations, sales personalization, and news production.[3][5][6] Their advantages include production speed (minutes instead of weeks), predictable subscription costs, easy content updates without reshoots, and consistent multilingual localization.[6] Critics note quality limits for emotionally sensitive or trust-critical communication, where human presenters remain preferable, and the risk that realistic avatars blur the line between human and machine-generated content.[5]

Malaysian broadcasters were early adopters: Astro AWANI's AI avatars Joon and Monica began presenting news segments in May 2023, and Astro AEC's "AI News Flash" uses cloned digital versions of its human anchors.[1][2] Local vendors now offer AI avatar production for Malaysian businesses, including corporate training content claimable under HRD Corp levies, and the country's digital creative industry — animation, digital games, and creative technology — is supported by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).[7][8] As in other countries, the use of cloned faces and voices in Malaysia raises consent, disclosure, and personal data questions under the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), and the National AI Office (NAIO) has promoted responsible adoption of generative AI.[8]
